True Story.

A religion teacher assigned her class an essay on what makes a good Christian. One student wrote about praying nightly, saying no to abortion, banning gay marriage, and donating money. The other student wrote about talking to God and allowing people to enjoy their lives, and supporting gay marriage. The day the teacher was to hand the papers back, she called up the second student and told him she would pray for him when he went to hell. The student asked why would he be going to hell, and why he got an F on his paper. The teacher told him that Catholicism is against gay marriage. The student looked at her for a minute, then said aloud, "I'm gay." The teacher kicked him out of class as if he had said fuck or worshiped Satan. A girl in the back of class who had a boyfriend and was obviously straight got up and left too.

If you would leave the classroom, repost this. It doesn't matter if you're
straight, bi, or gay. It doesn't matter if you're catholic or not. Everyone is a human being and deserves happiness.

(Actually, I'm not entirely convinced this is a true story. But its heart is in the right place, so I'm posting it.)

Man, super-internet untrue story. But you're right - a good heart in it.

Modern Christianity has ruined the message so bad that I fear for any recovery of the true spirit of Christ. The more far-left I get, the strong my own personal belief has come, but I can't call myself a Christian even though (and this is hubris) I get it, and they don't. Argh.

As I say to my dad, "Modern Christianity is so focused on the details and doesn't look at the big picture. I say we should work on loving each other as we would ourselves. When we get that down pat, we can then worry about whether a hot sausage in the dugout is such a big deal."

I don't quite phrase it that way.

Anyway, I'm not posting this in my weblog because it reads like one of those things that gets passed around on the internet that drive me nuts. But I'll express solidarity by admitting this:

I've totally kissed a guy and enjoyed it.

Oh, it's very much one of those fake internet things that purports to be true and makes its way around the internet. In general, I hate those things. But like I said, I think the sentiment is a good one. Thanks for your comment, Clinton.

(And your "hot sausage" line made me laugh like a lunatic.)

Solidarity!

Funny enough, I think the big injuction against homosexuality is an interesting cultural thing that got mixed into religion... I mean, you had the Hebrews running around in the mid-east, getting all monotheistic in a crowd of religions (Babylonians, Egyptians, Greeks etc.), and they needed to establish this social identity through cultural practices to hold unity. Anti-homosexuality? Well, that was one way to stand out, for sure.

Of course, the problems with modern Christianity mirror the problems in the Jewish community that Jesus was pointing at in the first place...
